Russia/Ukraine: Activist calls for return of History to Nigerian schools

Popular human right activist and public commentator, Comrade Razaq Olokoba, has called for the return of History subject to Nigeria’s schools lamenting that, the Russia/Ukraine crisis has exposed the ignorance of some Nigerian youth about the genesis of the current crisis and how to act if one is caught in such a cross-fire next time.

Olokoba expressed his disappointment that, some Nigerian students in the crisis ridden country should have envisaged war long time before it eventually broke out between the two countries, blaming their delay in fleeing the country on lack of historical knowledge of the global war.

The activist, made the call Tuesday at a Current Affairs Yoruba Programme, Oro T’Onlo on the Lagos Television (Ltv), anchored by Toyin Bamisaye where he regretted that removal of History from the schools’ curriculum has done an incalculable damage to the intelligence of several students both home and abroad.

According to him, if the students have had the knowledge of history, they would have read the handwriting on the wall clearly when the threat from Russia was pointing towards the fact that war was inevitable reminding that, some world powers hardly stop war from happening because that would provide market for their weapons for wars.

“Wars nowadays are business ventures for the world powers who are manufacturers of all sort of weapons of mass destruction. Even where there is no war, they are ready to cook up a false alarm to instigate war so they can sell their products.

“Iraq was a typical example where President Saddam Hussein was accused of storing weapons of mass destruction. It was a ploy to call a dog bad name to hang it. After the war and the President has been assassinated, no single pin of destruction was found. But the damage has been done,” Olokoba regretted.

He expressed sadness that, Ukraine allowed the avoidable war to happen because it failed to decode the ominous sign of war on the horizon, saying, Nigeria would have avoided the carnage in the characteristic manner of its leaders who, he said are always cautious of any traps that can cajole the country into slipping into pitches that can eventually lead to wars.

Olokoba, who gave kudos to Nigerian leaders for their maturity and sharp intelligence along that line, pointed out that, the way Nigeria avoided war with Cameroun was not out of cowardice but was borne out of maturity and intelligence, stating that, no few weapon manufacturers were highly disappointed across the world.

He, therefore, commended the Federal Government’s efforts at evacuating the Nigerians, especially the students trapped in the war zone, saying, the situation is risky and the reason the government has been very tactical about the evacuation exercise.
