Rivers crisis: Wike may be heading to political oblivion – Majeed Dahiru

Nyesom Wike, the immediate past governor of Rivers State and Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) may be heading to political oblivion if the ongoing crisis in Rivers State does not end in his favour.

Some members if the state House of Assembly, who are reportedly Wike’s loyalists, had on Monday initiated impeachment against the state governor, Sim Fubara.

In a counter-attack, supporters fought back and sacked the pro-Wike Speaker of the Assembly and replaced him with a staunch ally of Fubara.

However, Majeed Dahiru a popular newspaper columnist, who spoke in an interview with AIT, noted that if Governor Fubara, overcomes the impeachment threat, that could mean the descent into political oblivion for Wike.

He warned outgoing governors against imposing their preferred successor, adding that experience had shown that this does not sugur well.

“Governors have learnt that the best thing to do as an outgoing governor is to simply make sure that in eight years, you have entrenched good governance; your legacy of fidelity to the constitution and rebuilding of institutions is so solid that even when you leave, nobody can use such a situation against you; that should be your only concern. And to allow the democratic processes within your party to pro with their preferred candidate. The enterprise of historic successors never works,” Dahiru said.

“You saw what happened in Edo, and what happened in Edo might likely happen in Rivers because, if Siminalayi Fubara survives this attempt to impeach him, if he survives it, Wike might be sent into political oblivion. You know why; he will now become a retired general without his troops because his troops and his command base are the Rivers State government and resources.”
