Reps reject bill proposing single 6-year tenure for President, govs, lawmakers

Members of the House of Representatives on Thursday rejected a bill sponsored by Ikenga Ugochinyere and 33 others proposing single 6-year tenure for President, governors and lawmakers.

The bill sought to amend the 1999 constitution which allows political office holders to serve two terms of four years each making eight years. It also intended to impose the zonal rotation of presidential and governorship seats, as well as holding of the elections in one day.

The bill also aimed to reduce wastage which results from political office holders spending right years in office.

However when the Bill was put to a voice vote, those against it were more leading to its permanent rejection.

Part of the bill ‘seeks to amend Section 76 of the Principal Act by inserting a new Sub-section (3).’

“(3) For the Purposes of Section (1) of this section, all elections into the offices of President, Governors, National Assembly and State Houses of Assembly shall hold simultaneously on the same date to be determined by the Independent National Electoral Commission in consultation with the National Assembly and in accordance with the Electoral Act.”
