The Rural Electrification Agency (REA) has performed the ground-breaking ceremony of a 2.5MW solar hybrid power plant at Nigeria Defence Academy (NDA), Kaduna State.
The project is an initiative of the REA to support the academy and ensure uninterrupted power supply and being powered under the REA-NEP Energising Education Programme Phase 11 that had seen similar projects executed at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, in Anambra State, and Alex Ekwueme Federal University of Ndukwu Ikwo (AE-FUNAI), Ebonyi State.
The power plant is to be sited on a 400 x 700-metre land, and expected to provide additional 2.5 megaworth of offgrade energy to NDA.
It is part of the Federal Government’s ongoing effort to provide sustainable energy to federal universities and teaching hospitals in the country’s six geopolitical zones.
The ground breaking ceremony was performed by the Minister of Defence, Major General Bashir Salihi Megashi.

The Managing Director of the REA, Ahmed Salihijo Ahmed, noted that the agency would execute quality work that would stand the test of time, assuring that the project would start to address problems impeding growth and development of nation’s tertiary institutions.
“By the time we complete it,” he said, “we are going to have some dedicated female, and obviously some male engineers as well that will be working hand in hand with the contractor during the whole period where they look to continue keeping the plan sustainable.”
