Omiete Blessing

A Rivers statesman and frontline business leader in the country, Dr. Emi Membere-Otaji has expressed dismay that the ongoing political crisis between the loyalists of Governor Siminalayi Fubara and the Minister of Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, is distracting real governance and development in the state.

Otaji however joined all other meaning Nigerians to call on all parties involved in the states recent political squabbles to sheath their swords.

In a press statement by his media aide, Anderson Hart, Dr. Otaji noted that in recent months most of the negative political news in the country have come from Rivers state, which according to him is not only bad for business but also distracts real governance and development in the state.

Dr. Otaji, the present National Deputy President of the Nigerian Association of Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines, and Agriculture (NACCIMA), who expressed sadness over the outcome of the crisis on the economy of the state, stressed, “I must state the obvious that enough should be enough. It deeply pains me that my state is daily being dragged into the mud.”

He observed that the political heat is not only affecting the state but the nation at large as the state is not only the headquarters of the nation’s energy source but also its major source of income.

Dr. Otaji pointed out that in the present days where online news and publications are read globally in real time, such negative actions in any part of the country can bring disrepute to the nation in the international community, and also a distraction to Mr President in his bid to reposition the country at this time.

He emphasised that “in a state there is only one Executive Governor and one government with the judiciary and legislature as branches’, adding that the role of the judiciary and legislature is not to obviously truncate governance in any guise but to complement the efforts of the ruling executive branch, while the executive branch is to also provide enabling environment for the legislative and judiciary branches to function.
