The Lagos State Police Command has disclosed that the lady who reportedly jilted the Lagos State Polytechnic (LASPOTECH) student, Joseph Mayowa, who committed suicide, last Friday, has been invited for questioning.
Recall that the 34-year-old Mayowa, a part-time student of the Department of Hospitality Management Technology, LASPOTECH, Ikorodu Campus, had gulped a bottle of the deadly insecticide, Sniper, leading to his death.
Confirming the incident, the Lagos Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Elkana Bala, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), said the girlfriend, Olokodana Bolaji, had told the police that she had a quarrel with the deceased before he decided to take his own life.
Bala said the 24-year-old Bolaji told the police that the deceased was in the habit of beating her.
“On May 31, 2019 at about 5.30am, Shagamu Road Police Station, Ikorodu, received an information that Joseph Mayowa, a part-time student of Lagos State Polytechnic, Ikorodu Campus, Department of Hospitality Management Technology, drank a poisonous chemical identified as Sniper, following a misunderstanding between him and his girlfriend, Olokodana Bolaji.
“Bolaji was also a graduate of the same Institution. He was rushed to hospital by his neighbours following an alarm raised by his girlfriend, but eventually died.
“In the statement of his girlfriend, she told Police investigators that herself and the deceased dated for nine years.
“That the deceased is fond of beating her. That while she was with the deceased in his room, they had a quarrel and he, as usual, resorted into physical violence. That she ran into the restroom and upon return she found him gasping for breath with an empty bottle of Sniper beside him,” Bala stated.
The PPRO stated further that homicide detectives from the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (SCIID), Yaba, have visited the scene at Eyita area, Ikorodu.
It was also learnt that the corpse of Mayowa was deposited at the General Hospital mortuary in Ikorodu, for autopsy.
