Police Inspector arrested for killing Islamic Cleric

A 28-year-old Islamic Cleric, Fatai Oladipupo, was on Wednesday shot dead by a police Inspector at Obabiyi in Ikotun/Igando area of Lagos. 

The father of two was allegedly walking home when Inspector Okoro Charles, attached to the Ikotun Police Division, fired a shot killing him.

Investigation revealed the policeman was chasing a motorcyclist, who had refused to part with a bribe.  

Charles had fired a shot at the motorcyclist, but missed his target. Unfortunately the bullet hit and killed Oladipupo.

Information has it that the late Oladipupo’s wife had delivered a baby two weeks back.

The Lagos Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Elkana Bala, who confirmed the incident said the police Inspector had been arrested.

Bala, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), said investigation was ongoing as the suspect will be subject to internal disciplinary procedure. 

The PPRO said: “ Lagos State Police Command has arrested Inspector Okoro Charles attached to Ikotun Division. 

“The Inspector was arrested in connection with a shooting incident reported on Wednesday, May 20, 2020, at about 10:05p.m., along Obabiyi, Igando road, Ikotun, which led to the death of one Fatai Oladipupo. 

“The Inspector will be subjected to internal disciplinary procedures, known as Orderly Room Trial at the State Provost Department, and if found guilty, he will be handed over to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (SCIID), Yaba, for prosecution in conventional Court. 

“ Investigation is ongoing to unravel the circumstances surrounding the shooting incident.”

The spokesperson said the Commissioner of Police, Hakeem Odumosu, has called for calm.

“The CP consoles with the family and friends of the deceased. He assures them that Justice will prevail. Members of the Public will be updated on the outcome of the investigation, ” he said.
