Police begin investigation into Sokoto killing over blasphemy

The Sokoto State Poilce Command has commenced investigation to unravel the circumstances surrounding the lynching of a butcher in Sokoto.
According to the command’ Public Relations Officer (PRO), ASP Ahmad Rufa’i, who spoke in a statement, the victim, one Usman Buda, was mobbed to death by his colleagues for allegedly blaspheming Prophet Mohammed.
The statement read: “On 25th June 2023 at about 0955hrs, a distress call was received at about 0920hrs that one Usman Buda ‘M’ of Gwandu LGA a Butcher at Sokoto Abbatoir allegedly blasphemed the holy prophet Muhammad (SAW) as a result, he was mobbed and attacked by some Muslims faithful who inflicted serious injuries on him.

“Upon receiving the information, the Commissioner of Police, Area Commander Metro, and DPO Kwanni led a team of policemen and all other operational commanders to the scene.

“On arrival, the mob escaped the scene and left the victim unconscious where he was rescued and taken to Usmanu Danfodio Teaching Hospital Sokoto for treatment, and was later confirmed dead at the said hospital meanwhile, the area is calm.”

Ali Hayatu Kaigama, State Commissioner of Police, Sokoto State Command, the statement added, is has urged the people to go about their lawful businesses without fear.

He promised to fish out the culprits for prosecution.
Sokoto State has come in the news again for the wrong reason not long after Deborah by her schoolmates was stoned to death over alleged blasphemy.
