Police have arrested three suspected armed robbers after an exchange of gunfire with them at Jabi -Daki Biyu junction in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.
According to Benneth Igweh, the FCT Police Commissioner, who on Tuesday paraded the suspects before journalists at the command, the incident took place at about around 10:45 pm on Sunday when a team of police operatives from Utako division led by the DPO, Victor Godfrey, encountered the gang during a patrol.
“Upon sighting the police operatives, the robbers opened fire on our men from the car, which resulted in a gun duel and three of them were arrested in the process,” Igweh disclosed.
However they were overpowered by the superior fire from the police.
Igweh identified the suspects as Ibrahim Yakubu, Ugwu Monday Joseph, and Lawal Mustapha.
The CP further disclosed that the suspects have confessed to having been operating at some locations in the city centre.
He added that some exhibits, including two English pistols, two magazines, 49 live ammunition, three torches and several charms were recovered from the suspects.
Furthermore, Igweh said a combined team of police operatives and a civilian joint task force led by the commander of the Rapid Respond Squad of the FCT Police Command raided some black spot, known as Kabusa Panteka in the city during which eight suspects were arrested.
He listed items recovered during the raid as a trailer containing used car parts, armoured cables, one canter pickup truck, and two buses with one containing burnt armoured cables.
CP Igweh added that five salon vehicles, two Honda Accords and two Corolla cars, 14 inverter batteries and nine used cars were also recovered from them.
“Suspects could not give satisfactory explanation on the exhibits seen in their possession and that they would be charged to court after investigations,” Igweh said.
