The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Lagos State chapter has reacted to the ongoing clamour by some groups for Seyi Tinubu, the son of President Bola Tinubu to become the next governor of Lagos State.
According to the Lagos PDP spokesperson, Hakeem Amode, rejected, Seyi’s candidacy for governor will not fly as it will be rejected by Lagosians, saying, “Lagos will not serve him.”
He noted that with President Tinubu having served as the governor of the state between 1999 and 2007 and now serving as President, Lagosians will not ‘serve the father and still serve the son,’ in reference to any possibility of Seyi becoming governor like his father.
Hakeem vowed that any attempt by the ruling All Progressive Congress, APC, or the President to impose his son on Lagosians will be restricted.
He further said governorship is not a family inheritance that could be passed on to the next generation adding that the loss of Lagos votes by the APC and President Tinubu in the 2023 Presidential election was an indication that Lagosians are tired of Tinubu’s political stronghold on Lagos and will reject his son to be the next governor of the state.
It is recalled that recently, some groups such as the Coalition of Nigerian Youth Leaders, had issued a statement in Owerri, Imo State, inviting Seyi Tinubu to run for governor in Osun or Imo states, where his family is reportedly from.
Another group, Friends of Seyi Tinubu, had also endorsed him to become governor.
However, All Progressives Congress in Lagos, has dismissed the claim that Seyi Tinubu is eyeing the governorship seat.
According to its spokesperson, Seye Oladejo, determining who will take over from Governor Sanwo-Olu is too early as the 2027 elections are still far away.
Joe Igbokwe a chieftain and former spokesperson of the party had also said campaigning for Seyin Tinubu by some ‘faceless’ groups is a way of discrediting the President.
“It is too early to be discussing the 2027 elections. We should rally behind the governor and the president now to advance development,” Oladejo said.
“Who are these faceless people pushing Seyi Tinubu for Lagos Governor? This is a needless distraction. The real target is to bring down President Bola Tinubu. Ruling Lagos is not a job for amateurs,” Igbokwe said.
