The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) will on Saturday, April 6, mark the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace, across the world.
This is contained in a press statement signed by Anthony Asuquo, event coordinator and head coach of Tony International Gymnastic, on Thursday, in Abuja.
The statement said the event will be celebrated in Abuja with over 300 school children, who will feature in three sports; Badmiton, Basketball and Gymnastics.
Asuquo said that the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace was an opportunity to raise the banner for the power of sport for development and peace.
“UNESCO’s aim is to contribute to the building of peace, by eradicating poverty especially as the world takes development forward.
“This year we are mobilizing over 300 school children in public schools and less privilleged homes, with 100 percent support from UNESCO to participate in Badmiton, Basketball and Gymnastics, ” Asuquo stated.
UNESCO pursues its objectives through five major programmes: education, natural sciences, social human, sciences, culture and communication information.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that In 2013, the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed April 6, as the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace, to celebrate the contribution of sports and physical activity to education, human development, healthy lifestyles and a peaceful world.
