As the Ogun State House of Assembly is getting set to elect new leadership next week, feelers from the Gateway State hint that the coast appears clearer than ever for the incumbent Speaker, Rt. Hon. Olakunle Taiwo Oluomo to continue on his seat for another term.
Our correspondent gathered Monday that, some of the members from the Central District speculated to be nursing ambitions to slug it out with Oluomo have reached out to the Speaker to assure him of their solid support and unshaken loyalty for his leadership quality and team work style.
A source close to the leadership of the All progressives Congress (APC), Ogun State Chapter confided in our reporter that, the party’s leadership and relevant stakeholders decided to prevail on dissenting voices within the House to give Oluomo another chance to maintain the crisis-free atmosphere that allows conducive environment for rapid development in the state.
According to the source, nobody wants a repeat of the 2010 ugly scenario that led to the closing down of the House by the personnel of the State Security Service (SSS) thereby paralysing the responsibilities of the legislators, pointing out that, the way and manner the current House under the able leadership of Oluomo is navigating the affairs of the legislative House fosters Executive/Legislative harmony that leads to what could be termed; ‘One Day, One Development Wonder’ in the state to the satisfaction and admiration of the good people of Ogun.
In the words of an experienced legislator from the central senatorial District of the state who pledged anonymity when contacted for his view on the issue and his advice for the incoming House of Assembly Members, the elderly man simply said and I quote:
“He who factors thoughts of political Leaders and Elders into his thinking and actions will definitely rise in politics. And on the other hand, because of how influential political leaders are in the community and within the political circle, he who ignores them will never accord the common man any respect in terms of ideological differences. So he who wants to grow politically has to be very careful and tactical.”
Insinuations some observers read into the statement of the elder statesman above is that, Oluomo’s conduct could be likened to that proverbial child that has perfected the art of hand cleaning and so can dine and wine with the elders.

“Sentiment apart, the tenure of Oluomo has shown us that, there is no gain or benefit in the Executive under the governor and the legislature under the Speaker to be at daggers drawn with each other. The effect of such would be like the proverbial fight between two elephants where the grasses would always be victims,” a chieftain of the party from the water side axis chipped in, reminding that, “the grasses in this case are the masses.”
By this time come next Wednesday, where the pendulum of victory between Oluomo and his other contestants will swing will be part of history.
Although, it is observed that there is calm in the camps of the contending caucuses across the state with the belief that the issue of the speakership is settled, political pundits however remind that, it is not over yet until it is properly over because, according to them, 24 hours is a long period in politics.
