Nigerians defy police warnings, protest in Abuja, Lagos, other cities

Despite the stern warning by Nigeria Police, protesters in Abuja and Lagos dropped out en masse to protest bad governance on June 12, Democracy Day.

 

Activist, Deji Adeyanju said protesters were teargassed by the Police in Abuja. He also said protesters have been arrested.

 

“We have just been attacked by the police and SSS in Abuja as expected.

“Some of our comrades have been arrested by the police. They beat one of the protesters -Blessing Dawon badly and damaged her phone. Bandits, Boko Haram & our Govt all attack us. #June12thProtest,” he said.

 

Comedian Debo Adebayo, know as Mr. Macaroni said he will go on to protest despite pleas by family and friends urging him not to. 

 

“Friends and Families have called throughout the week.. up until now they are still calling And it honestly breaks my heart that I still have to go out. I can’t in good conscience sit back at home while Nigerians are out there risking their lives to fight for our freedom,” he said.

 

The comedian said he has received threats from “strange contacts.”

 

“I have received so many threats from strange contacts!! They have also sent different people to me telling me I must not step out!! I have everything on record!!

I will not be a prisoner in my own country!! We deserve better!!!

Protesters were dispersed with teargas in Ojota, Lagos. The protesters later regrouped.

In Ibadan, Oyo State, protesters carrying a coffin flooded the streets to demand the resignation of President Muhammadu Buhari.

 

The protesters demanding reversal of the ban on the social network, Twitter, withdrawal of troops from the  South East, among others.
