Nigerian Immigration suspends officer asking tourist for money in a viral video

The Nigerian Immigration Service, NIS, has suspended indefinitely one of its officers, Okpravero Ufuoma, stationed at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, for asking a tourist to find him ‘something.’

 

Ufuoma was captured in a video which has now gone viral demanding money from the tourist without knowing he was being recorded.

 

In the video Ufuoma asked the tourist what he had for him and when the tourist said he did not have money, Ufuoma replied ‘’Common.”

 

‘’If it comes from you, I am happy with anything” Ufuoma said

After the tourist suggested he could use his card to withdraw money for him using a POS or an ATM., Ufuoma responded ‘Give me some money and I will appreciate it”

The NIS ,in a statement, fumed at the action of the officer saying it did not reflect the values and ethics of professionalism upheld by the NIS.

It further stated that Ufuoma has been suspended indefinitely pending the outcome of disciplinary procedures which are in accordance with the law and Public Service rules.

“We wish to inform the public that the conduct of the officer identified as Okpravero Ufuoma, an Assistant Superintendent of Immigration ll (ASI 2) at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, does not reflect the values and professionalism upheld by the NIS.

We condemn this misconduct in strongest terms as it undermines the ongoing reforms aimed at enhancing our service standards.

As a result, the officer in question has been indefinitely suspended pending the outcome of disciplinary procedure in accordance with the law and public service rules.”
