Nigeria Fencing Federation has disclosed that the nation would in the months ahead host several international fencing competitions.
President of the fencing federation Yinka Samuel told the Nigerian Xpress Sports that the first of the international meets would be hosted in Lagos this December.
He confirmed that Nigeria has secured the hosting right for the men’s epee junior World Cup, the Commonwealth fencing championships as well as the Senior African Championships billed for 2025.
It would be noted that the Junior World Cup is a prestigious competition organized by the International Fencing Federation (FIE) specifically for young fencers.
“Junior” refers to the age category, typically for athletes under 20 years old.
“The World Cup would be staged in December in Lekki, Lagos. After the December show we would also be hosting the Commonwealth championships in Lagos. We are in fact moving to attract several international meets to Nigeria as a way of making fencing grow in Nigeria,” Samuel said.
Samuel said Nigeria is blessed with good and immensely talented fencers that would do the country proud in the sport insisting that his federation is doing everything to nurture her fencers to international stardom.
