Residents of Lagos, Nigeria’s commercial centre, have slammed the state governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu over comments that vehicle drivers should roll up their car windows to avoid being robbed in traffic.
The return of traffic robbery in the state is giving commuters concern as more people report being robbed in traffic.
On Wednesday, Lagos witnessed gridlock across the state and a high rate of robbery.
A video posted on social media shows a woman, who was robbed on Eko bridge, shaking uncontrollably.
Sanwo-Olu’s comment was seen by many as insensitive and an admission of helplessness by the state government.
“Rights advocate, Segun Awosanya said not all Nigerians have the privilege of driving in bulletproof vehicles.
“Our car windows are not bulletproof Mr Governor @jidesanwoolu. Right before my eyes on Eko bridge mutated victims of society are brandishing machetes & light arms, smashing into windows of vehicles & robbing them blind. It took an intervention to end the streak. #SecureLagos,” he said.
The Rapid Response Squad (RSS) team of the Nigerian Police in the state has not been seen in recent time on strategic points in the state as usual.
