Lagos govt, stakeholders brainstorm on solutions to challenges facing hospitality sector

Lagos State Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, on Thursday engaged with stakeholders in the tourism sector to find solutions to challenges facing the industry.

 

 

 

According to the Commissioner for Tourism, Arts and Culture, Toke Benson-Awoyinka, the engagement with the theme: “Addressing current industry challenges, exploring emerging trends, understanding policy frameworks and unveiling collaborative opportunities within the entire hospitality value chain,” was long overdue considering happenings in the hospitality sector, as well as emerging trends.

 

 

 

She said there was a need to ‘ always share views on how to improve this sector and continue to operate in line with acceptable best practices.’

Awoyinka noted that the hospitality sector plays a vital role in the economic development of Lagos State through provision of employment and showcasing the rich cultural heritage, vibrant arts scene, and unparalleled hospitality of the state.

She further said the COVID-19 pandemic resulted in significant challenges to the industry.

“We want to address these challenges head-on. We must adapt to the changing landscape by embracing new technologies and sustainable practices,” she said.

The commissioner expressed the state’s commitment to creating an enabling environment for the hospitality sector to thrive.

One of the panelists. the chairman, Lagos Internal Revenue Service, LIRS, Ayodele Subair and the Special Adviser to the governor on taxation, AbdulKabir Ogunbo emphasised the importance of paying tax, adding that the government has begun moves to harmonise all taxes to curb multiple taxation.

The General Manager, Lagos State Safety Commission, Lanre Mojola, General Manager, Lagos State Parking Authority, Mrs Olabisi Adelabu , Special Adviser to the governor on Transport, Mr. Sola Giwa reiterated the need for business owners in the hospitality sector to work with the state government in curbing indiscriminate parking, ensuring safety of customers and avoiding noise pollution.

Harping on the need to address the issue of multiple taxation, the panelists sought a business owner’s corporation in tackling the menace.

Ogungbo disclosed that very soon Governor Sanwo-Olu will unveil a new platform to harmonise various tax payments which will block all avenues for multiple taxation.
