Lagos govt. closes Ladipo market over dirtiness, other offences

The Lagos State Government has closed the popular motor spare parts market, Ladipo market, for dirtiness and other offences.
The closure was done through the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, who ordered immediate closure of the market located in Mushin.
This was not the first time the market would be closed by the government for environmental offences such as reckless waste disposal, unhygienic premises, and non-payment of waste bills.

According to the commissioner, the market would remain closed until the traders clean up the market and comply with environmental laws in the state.

The commissioner further said that markets in the state must adhere strictly to environmental laws and regulations put in place for the well-being of residents, adding the closure of the market would serve as warnings to other stakeholders.

He, however, expressed government’s commitment to collaborate with market stakeholders, to enable them meet required environmental standards,

Also , the Managing Director/CEO of LAWMA, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, said a ‘thorough assessment of the environmental impact of the market’s activities and the implementation of necessary remedial measures,’would be carried out, adding that the agency would not hesitate to take decisive actions, where and when environmental laws were flouted.
The closure of Ladipo Market follows a similar action taken against Oyingbo, Alayabiagba, Oke-odo markets, and some sections of Tejuosho Market, for serial infractions.
