Kogi Police name, arrests officers filmed extorting commuters

Kogi State Police Command says it has arrested and detained four officers who were filmed collecting bribes and assaulting commuters.

A statement on Sunday by the Command’s spokesman William Aya said the police personnel in the video were attached to Adogo Division, and were on patrol duty along Adogo-Okene road on the day of the incident.

The personnel reportedly extorted N25,000 from a commuter while another was physically assaulted by one of the men in uniform.

According to a voice in the video, one of the police officers removed his uniforms and followed a commuter to an ATM point where he exhorted N25,000 from him.

A viral video on Instagram shows the shamed police officers assaulting a female passenger while another drew his gun at another passenger.

“The Commissioner of Police, Kogi State Police Command, CP Idrisu Dauda Dabban, psc (+), fdc, while condemning the incident, noted that the Police officers have been identified and detained at the State Criminal Investigations Department,” the statement read.

The officers, according to the statement, are ASP Isah Barnabas, Inspector Ifediegwu Godwin, Sgt Emmanuel Ochima and CPL Umameh Mathias who physically assaulted one of the commuters.

Aya said ASP Isah has been issued an official query while the three other junior officers are currently undergoing an orderly room trial, that is police internal disciplinary actions.

The police commissioner further noted that the Command is doing its best to establish contact with the victims. He urged the victims to reach out to the Command via 08107899269.

The development followed an order for investigation from the inspector general of police Usman Baba.
