Kemi Adeosun didn’t need NYSC certificate to hold political office – Court

The Abuja Division of the Federal High Court says disgraced ex-finance minister Kemi Adeosun does not need the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) exemption certificate to hold a political office.

Following the NYSC certificate scandal, Ms Adeosun resigned and returned to the United Kingdom in 2018.

Justice Taiwo Taiwo, in his ruling, on the Originating Summons with suit number FHC/ABJ/CS/303/21 brought by Wole Olanipekun SAN, on her behalf, held that the NYSC certificate based on the constitution was not a mandatory requirement to hold a political office in the country.

It is unclear if President Muhammadu Buhari’s regime or the police will sue or has filed a lawsuit against Ms Adeosun for using a forged NYSC exemption certificate.

While Ms Adeosun was the Plaintiff in the suit, the Attorney-General of the Federation was the sole Defendant.

Following the NYSC certificate scandal, Ms Adeosun had resigned her position.

Though being in possession and using a forged document is a crime, President Buhari and the country’s security agencies turned a blind eye and Ms Adeosun returned to the UK.

Recall that in April, presidential spokesman, Malam Garba Shehu, had said the position of President Buhari’s regime on the extremist views of Dr. Isa Pantami would have been different if he (Pantami) had been  involved in a certificate forgery like the former Minister of Finance.

Malam Shehu said Dr. Pantami’s extremist views and ties with terrorist groups were a lesser crime than certificate forgery.
