Just in: Libya, Nigeria excluded from AFCON qualifier Tuesday fixtures

The Confederation of African Football, CAF, has excluded Nigeria’s Super Eagles and Libya’s Mediterranean Knights from the Group D second-leg fixtures in the ongoing 2025 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.

The exclusion was due to the controversy, trailing the mistreatment meted out to the Nigerian team by the Libyan football authorities in the North African country.

The match was billed to take place in Libya at 8 p.m.

Nigeria had last week Friday beaten Libya 1-0 in the first leg, which was played at Godswill Akpabio Stadium, Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital.

However, the Super Eagles and officials were left stranded for about 14 hours at a Libyan airport.

The painful ordeal compelled the team to forget the match and returned home.

Consequently, CAF, which has launched an investigation into the incident, deleted the match from today’s fixtures, pending the outcome of its probe.

Meanwhile, the Libyan Football Federation, LFF, has alleged sabotage and threatened to take legal action against Nigeria.

In the update for the fixtures on its official X (formerly Twitter) account, CAF omitted the Libya-Nigeria match.
