JUST IN: Buhari presides over security council meeting ahead elections

President Muhammadu Buhari is currently presiding over a meeting of the National Security Council.

The meeting reportedly commenced as 11:00 am and is holding at the Council Chambers of the Aso Rock Presidential Villa, in Abuja.

With barely 48 hours to the Presidential and National Assembly elections, it is  believed that the meting aims to review the readiness of all security agencies, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) ahead of the elections.

Reports say that at the meeting were Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, Chief of Defense Staff (CDS), Gen. Lucky Irabor, Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt.-Gen. Farouk Yahaya, Chief of the Naval Staff (CNS), Vice Admiral Awwal Gambo; Chief Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Isiaka Amao and the Inspector- General of Police, Mr. Usman Alkali Baba.

Also in attendance were Directors-General of the Department of State Services (DSS) and National Intelligence Agency (NIA), Yusuf Bichi and Ahmed Abubakar, respectively.

The National Security Council advises the President on matters of public security including those relating to any organisation or agency established by law for ensuring the security of the Federation.

It comprises the President who is the Chairman; the Vice- President who is the Deputy Chairman; the Chief of Defence Staff; the Minister of Interior; the Minister of Defence; the Minister of Foreign Affairs; the National Security Adviser; the Inspector-General of Police; and whoever the President wishes to be present at the meeting for strategic reasons.

Believed to be the last before the elections, the security meeting comes five months after the Council last met to receive updates from the Service Chiefs and heads of other security agencies.
