JUST IN: Buhari chairs Council of State meeting over Naira redesign, general elections

President Muhammadu Buhari, on Friday, presided over a meeting of the National Council of State, to discuss the current upheaval surrounding the Naira redesign and currency swap as well as the upcoming general elections.

Former Presidents Goodluck Jonathan, Yakubu Gowon and Abdulsalami Abubakar were present, as was former President Olusegun Obasanjo, who participated in the meeting albeit virtually.

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, Senate Ahmad Lawan, and Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila were also present at the Council Chamber venue of the meeting.

Governors in attendance are Nasir el-Rufai of Kaduna State, Darius Ishaku of Taraba State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State and Babagana Zulum of Borno State.

Other governors who attended at the meeting also virtually were Ademola Adeleke of Osun State, Abubakar Badaru of Jigawa State, Yahaya Bello of Kogi State, Atiku Bagudu of Kebbi State, Prince Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State, Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto State, Simon Lalong of Plateau State and the deputy governors of Nasarawa and Bauchi states.

The meeting was also attended by the Minister of the FCT, Mohammed Bello, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Mr. Boss Mustapha, the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mr. Abubakar Malami SAN and the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Mr. Godwin Emefiele.

Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, was also present and was expected to brief the council on the preparations for the 2023 elections.

All Service Chiefs and heads of Security Agency were also physically present.
