INEC REC slumps, dies in Abuja hotel

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has lost one of its Resident Electoral Commissioners, REC.

Niyi Ijalaye, the REC in Ogun State reportedly slumped and died on Monday evening, shortly after attending a meeting at the headquarters of the Electoral body in Abuja.

He had returned to his hotel room, after the meeting presided over by the INEC Chairman Mahmood Yakubu, when tragedy struck.

The meeting was held to deliberate on the upcoming off-cycle governorship elections in Edo and Ondo States, as well as seven vacant positions in the state and National Assemblies.

It was gathered that the Ondo State native participated actively in the meeting and was reportedly in good spirits before his death later.

He became the Ogun State REC in March 2022, when his predecessor, Olusegun Agbaje, was transferred to Lagos State.
