I’m committed to defending Ijaw – Gov. Diri

The Governor of Bayelsa State, Senator Douye Diri, has stated that his commitment to defending the interest of the Ijaw nation and people remains top on his agenda.

He gave the assurance in a meeting with the Ijaw Leaders Consultative Forum in Yenagoa at the weekend and reiterated his readiness to ensure that the Ijaw, obviously the fourth largest ethnic group in the country, is accorded primacy of place in the scheme of things.

The governor was the pioneer Organising Secretary of the Ijaw National Congress. He disclosed that being governor of the only homogeneous Ijaw state in Nigeria, he would champion the Ijaw cause or interest.

Tasking the Ijaw-speaking people on unity, Diri said only unity would enable them to excel as a people.

 “For us to continue to improve the lives of our people, we must have unity of purpose, we must be united as Ijaw people and shouldn’t be seen to be pulling down ourselves.”

The Ijaw can be found in Bayelsa, Rivers, Delta, Edo, Ondo and Akwa Ibom states.
