Ikoyi collapsed building: Tribunal calls for public input into probe

 Tribunal of Inquiry set up by Lagos State Government to investigate the cause of the of the Collapsed Ikoyi building has called on the public, eye witnesses, industry stakeholders and other professional bodies to send their contribution and professional input that could help the tribunal in unravelling the circumstances surrounding the incident.

It is recall that the 21 storey building suddenly collapsed on November 1,2021 killing about 45 persons, including the developer, Femi Osibona, and 15 injured.

Three days later, Lagos State Governor, Bababjide Sanwo-Olu, inaugurated a six man Panel to probe the incident with a 30 days mandate to compete the task.

While briefing the press on Monday on the how far the panel had gone in it’s mandate after 19 days of sitting, the chairman of the panel, TPL. Tayo Ayinde, said the tribunal had visited the site of the collapse on Friday,  November 5, for a general assessment of the rescue operations, as well as paid a visit to the General Hospital, Broad Street to interview some of the survivors who could offer some eyewitness accounts.

He added a consultant Land Surveyor was contacted to conduct verticality tests on the remaining structures within the premises of the Ikoyi collapsed building, while request were sent to relevant government MDA’s to provide all files and documentation relating to the collapsed building.

“Writing to all consultants and developer/contractors associated with the project on 44 B,C,D Gerrard Road, Ikoyi; and listing more than 30 stakeholders relevant to the construction industry and the collapsed building, whose views, position papers and recommendations would be received and considered, ” he said.

Ayinde further confirmed some documents have been received by the Tribunal from relevant MDA’s and members of the panel have started studying them. He promised more people relevant to the investigation would be invited.

“We however appeal to members of the public, professional bodies and construction industry stakeholders, as well as individuals who have useful information and invite them to submit memoranda which have direct bearing on the particular issue being investigated, as well as their recommendations to prevent future occurrence. The results of the tests on the construction materials are still being awaited,” he added.
