I sleep well whenever we beat Cameroon, Ghana -Bassey

From George Aluo, Cairo

Veteran sports journalist, Paul Bassey has declared that the Super Eagles victory over Cameroon was “soul lifting” for the team and Nigerians.

Bassey while commending the players for fighting back gallantly in the game in which they trailed 1-2 at the interval said he sleeps well anytime Nigeria beats arch rivals Cameroon and Ghana.

“The victory over Cameroon was soul lifting. I must confess that I always sleep well whenever we beat either Cameroon or Ghana, given the rivalry between us and these countries. What the victory would do for the Eagles is that it would bring back the confidence of the team ahead of the game against South Africa.”

Bassey said he is happy the Eagles are meeting South Africa next, insisting that Bafana Bafana despite their victory over Egypt would be easier to handle than the host.

“Yes, South Africa has a good team but I think it is better playing them than the Egyptians. Egypt would have been very difficult to handle,” Bassey said.

Bassey who is the chairman of Akwa United FC urged the Eagles to go all the way and win the trophy having beaten the defending champions.

“Cameroon has won the trophy five times and Nigeria has done so three times, this is the opportunity to bridge the gap. We should go for victory number four. For me, this is very possible if the Eagles play their subsequent games with the same kind of fighting spirit with which they played Cameroon.”
