The daughter of jailed RnB singer, R.Kelly, 26-year old Buku Abi, has narrated how her father sexually assaulted her when she was younger.
In her documentary about her childhood, Abi said she was sexually abused by her father who is presently serving jail term for sexual assault on minors among other sexual offences.
In the two-episode documentary titled Karma: A Daughter’s Journey, which was premiered on Friday October 11, Abi accused her father of sexually abusing her as a child when she was between eight and nine year old, adding she first reported the incident to her mother Andrea in 2009 when she clocked 10-years
She said before she told her mother, she was initially too scared to tell anyone about her father’s actions for fear for her life.
“He was my everything. For a long time, I didn’t even want to believe that it happened. I didn’t know that even if he was a bad person he would do something to me.I was too scared to tell anybody. I was too scared to tell my mom,” she said in the documentary.
She commended the government for sending her father to jail saying jail was a “well-suited place” for him to be based on her “personal experience.”
“I really feel like that one millisecond completely just changed my whole life and changed who I was as a person and changed the sparkle I had and the light I used to carry.
“After I told my mom, I didn’t go over there anymore; my brother Robert and sister Jaah, we didn’t go over there anymore. And even up until now, I struggle with it a lot.”
Narrating how the abuse took place, Abi said: “I just remember waking up to him touching me and I didn’t know what to do, so I just kind of laid there, and I pretended to be asleep.”
She added that after telling her mother, she reported to the police and a complaint was filed against her father but the police couldn’t prosecute him because she ‘waited too long to report the matter which shattered her life.
R. Kelly is serving a 20-years jail term for child pornography, sex trafficking and enticement of minors for sex. He was sentenced in February 2023 and will be due for release in 2045.
