Asaba, the Delta State capital and environs, has been gripped by fear and sorrow, following the beheading of a security officer and one other yet to be identified by hoodlums.

The security officer was allegedly beheaded and burnt to death with a motorcycle along Ugbolu Mi-5 road in the Ugbolu community while the civilian was stabbed to death.

The hoodlums, who were suspected to be members of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, reportedly raided the community in the wee hours of Friday and killed the two people.

It was gathered that the killing of the two persons created panic in the areas, as IPOB members stormed the streets, chanting and shooting, thereby further instilling fear in the residents.

The dead bodies were reportedly discovered along Ugbolu road, near the 63 Brigade Nigerian Army headquarters, about 7:30 am.

However, confirming the death, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Bright Edafe, said only one dead body was found.

He added that the details of the killing of the unidentified man were were not yet clear, noting, however, that investigating the matter was still ongoing.

Violence has virtually become a daily occurrence in the South-east and South-south geopolitical zones if the country in recent times, owing to activities of IPOB, the pro-Biafra agitators.

IPOB has been in the forefront of campaigning for an independent Biafra out of Nigeria and has become more restive since the rearrest and incarceration of its leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, since June last year.

Kanu, who was facing felony charges as a result of his agitation for Biafra jumped bail when the military invaded his Abia State home. He was later rearrested in faraway Kenya and repatriated to Nigeria to continue his trial.

However, the court has since absolved him of the charges but the Federal Government has refused to obey court order to release him.

This has escalated tension in the two regions, as his supporters have unleashed a reign of terror on the people, resulting in several deaths and wanton destruction of multi-million Naira properties.

The killing of the security man in Asaba may not be unconnected to the violent agitation although many criminal elements have also taken advantage of the confusion to perpetrate evils.
