Hanifa Abubakar: Court remands prime suspect’s wife

For hiding Hanifa Abubakar, the five-year-old pupil, who was kidnapped and later killed by the proprietor of the school she attended, and not telling anyone about it, a Kano State Chief Magistrate’s Court has ordered the remand of Jamila Sani, 30, wife if the prime suspect, Abdulmalik Tanko Muhammad .

The woman is accused of concealing Hanifa Abubakar in her house for five days after her husband Kidnapped and brought her home.

When she was arraigned, the charge was read to her: “That you Jamila Muhammad Sani, a wife to Abdulmalik Tanko Muhammad, a proprietor and teacher of Noble Kids Comprehensive Academy located at Kwanar Dakota in Kano State, on the 4th December 2021 around 6pm, your husband brought to you Hanifa Abubakar wearing her school uniform and spent five days in your custody.

“You kept her hostage, knowing fully that your husband kidnapped her and you refused to disclose it to any person,” the charge read.

According to the prosecuting counsel, Lamido Dinki, who asked the court to remand the defendant in police custody pending the case diary, the alleged offence is in contravention of section 227 of the Penal Code.

Granting the Prosecution’s plea, Chief Magistrate Muhammad Jibril ordered that the remand of Sani  in police custody till February 2.

The kidnap and eventual murder of Hanifa Abubakar allegedly by the owner of the school in which she was a pupil, even after N6 million ransom was paid, sent shockwaves across the country. Youths in Kano have since torched the building housing the school while Kano State Governor, Abdullahi Ganduje, has bowed to sign the death penalty if passed on the accused.
