FCTA sues Abuja landlords over multi-million Naira ground rent indebtedness

The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) is set to drag some Abuja landlords to court for failing to pay their ground rent, amounting to billions of Naira.

The authorities explained it took the step after the landlords turned desf ears to all appeals to pay the necessary land chargers, which have risen to a whopping N29.5 billion.

Muhammad Sule, FCTA Director of Information,  in a statement said the defaulters had given ample opportunity to defray their debts but failed to do so.

He regretted that some of the debtors did not respond to repeated appeals and warnings, thereby frustrating the government’s plans to provide essential infrastructure  for the people.

According to the FCT Permanent Secretary, Adesola Olusade, government inaugurated the Coordinating Committee on the Recovery of Outstanding Ground Rent and Other Related Charges, headed by the FCT General Counsel/Secretary Legal Secretariat, Mohammed Umar, to recover unpaid rents and other sundry fees in Land Administration, headed.

The team engaged five law firms, owned by Senior Advocates of Nigeria, SANs, to prepare legal documents to commence legal action against the defaulting titleholders.

“There will be no sacred cows as the law will surely take its course because the only language it will understand is for the debtors to clear their outstanding debt,” the FCTA vowed.
