Falana fumes as DSS disobeys court order on Emefiele

Legal luminary, Mr. Femi Falana SAN, on Tuesday, urged the Federal Government to direct the Department of State Services (DSS) to comply with court orders.
This call came in light of a confrontation between operatives of the secret police and men of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) officials over the custody of the suspended Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Mr. Godwin Emefiele.
Emefiele is currently facing prosecution by the Federal Government on charges of illegal possession of firearms and ammunition.

The clash between the two law enforcement agencies occurred shortly after Justice Nicholas Oweibo of the Federal High Court in Lagos granted Emefiele bail in the sum of N20 million.

In response to the incident, the human rights lawyer expressed his dismay at the DSS operatives’ disobedience to the court’s directives.
Mr. Falana stated that the Federal Government should take immediate action to ensure the orders of the Federal High Court are promptly obeyed.
He pointed out that despite the Bola Tinubu administration’s commitment to uphold the rule of law, a group of State Security Service officials blatantly ignored the court’s orders, which granted bail to Mr. Godwin Emefiele for the offense of illegal possession of firearms.

The incident resulted in the attack on officials of the Correctional Center by armed DSS officers.
Mr. Falana emphasised that given President Tinubu’s strong warning against inter-agency physical attacks during his administration, the security officers who assaulted the Ikoyi Correctional Center officials should be identified and penalized accordingly.
In conclusion, Falana urged all public officers to learn from Mr. Emefiele’s current situation. He criticised Emefiele’s past behavior while serving as the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, noting that his disregard for court orders, including those from the Supreme Court of Nigeria, displayed arrogance and impunity.
