Elections: Yobe Govt. wants police to deploy more personnel in flash points

The Yobe State Government on Tuesday called on the Police to deploy more personnel in the state, especially at the “flash points’’, for Saturday and March 2 elections.

The state governor, Alhaji Ibrahim Gaidam, made the call when he received Deputy Inspector-General of Police (DIG), Mr Abubakar Tilli, at the Government House, Damaturu.

Gaidam, who was represented by the Deputy Governor, Mr Abubakar Aliyu, said that the state government had remained resolute “in urging our citizens to continue to be law-abiding and play politics according to the rules.

“I urge you to note that there are some flashpoints in parts of the state which require special attention through deployment of more personnel.

“It is, therefore, our fervent hope that the Nigeria Police will strengthen strategies to ensure that all eligible voters and our citizens abide by the laid down electoral guidelines.’’

He reiterated the need for security agencies, especially the police, to ensure safety of election materials and the staff of INEC.

“Specifically, we expect the police to ensure the safety of sensitive and non-sensitive election materials, polling units and voters.

“We also want you to ensure the safety of INEC’s permanent and ad hoc staff engaged for the exercise,’’ the governor added.

Earlier, Tilli had said that he was in the state to solicit cooperation and assistance to ensure free, fair and credible elections.

He urged the people to prevail on their wards to behave themselves throughout the elections period.

Tilli said: “we should not give chance to any undesirable element to cause trouble in the state.

“We, therefore, solicit the state government’s assistance and cooperation in discharging our duties.’’ (NAN)
