EFCC arrests ex-CBN gov, Emefiele moment after his release by DSS

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested immediate past Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Mr. Godwin Emefiele.

Emefiele was reportedly picked up last Thursday night, less than an hour after he regained his freedom from the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS).

According to an inside source, the former CBN is now being interrogated at the National Headquarters of EFCC at Jabi, in Abuja.

The source stated that the EFCC was probing Emefiele over alleged impropriety during his term as the head of the apex bank.

“Yes, Emefiele is currently in our (EFCC) custody; he was arrested last night less than an hour after the DSS freed him. He’s currently being interrogated at the Headquarters, as he’s being investigated for alleged misappropriation of funds amongst other things during his term as CBN governor,” the source noted.

Recall that the DSS had arrested Emefiele in June, on the same day President Bola Tinubu suspended him from office with immediate effect.

According to the Presidency, Emefiele was suspended at the time due to “ongoing investigation of his office and the planned reforms in the financial sector of the economy.”

With the latest development, fresh charges may be filed against Emefiele by the EFCC.
