DSS buckles under pressure, releases Joe Ajaero from custody

The Department of State Services, DSS, has released the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, Joe Ajaero, from its custody.

Ajaero was arrested at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Airport, Abuja,on Monday on his way to boarding a flight to the UK for an international assignment.

Condemning the arrest, the NLC said in a statement: “The assault on Nigerian workers continues. President of the NLC, Comrade Joe Ajaero, was arrested and abducted by men of the DSS at the Nnamdi Azikwe Airport Abuja this morning on his way to attend an official engagement of TUC United Kingdom and he is now detained at the office of the NSA.

“This intimidation and assault must stop!!!”

The National Administrative Council, NAC, of the NLC held an emergency meeting and issued a communiqué, demanding an unconditional release of Ajaero before midnight on Tuesday (today).

However, the DSS has bowed to pressure and released the labour leader minutes to the labour union’s deadline.

In a short statement posted on its X handle on Tuesday, the NLC said its president has been released.

“Breaking news… Comrade Joe Ajaero released from DSS detention. The struggle continues, we can’t be silenced.”
