COVID-19: NYSC members in Delta donate face masks, hand sanitisers

Mrs. Olutayo Samuel, the Delta Coordinator of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), has commended the state government for its proactive measures in containing the COVID-19 pandemic in the state.

Samuel gave the commendation during the presentation of face masks and hand sanitisers produced by NYSC members serving in the state to Delta State government in Asaba on Tuesday.

She enjoined the public to cooperate with the government in the fight against the virus by adhering strictly to the guidelines stipulated in the fight against the pandemic.

“The skills acquired by the corps members from Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development Programme created in 2012 was what they used in producing the face masks and hand sanitisers,” she said.

The coordinator said that in producing the items, all safety measures were observed according to the World Health Organisation (WHO) standard.

“The donation will assist in combating the pandemic which has claimed many lives in different parts of the world,” Samuel said.

The Secretary to Delta Government, Mr. Chiedu Ebie, while receiving the items, urged corporate organisations and individuals in the state to join forces with government to contain the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Ebie said that the donation of face masks and hand sanitisers by the corps members came at the right time.

According to him, the state government has also commenced the mass production of face masks which will soon be distributed free of charge to Deltans and other residents of the state.

“Because of the large number of face masks to be produced, the government will collaborate with NYSC to ensure that face masks are produced within the shortest possible time,” he said.

Ebie who also reiterated the importance of using soap and water to wash hands thoroughly for about 20 seconds, said that it was only when there was no soap and water that sanitisers could be used.

“Deltans should adhere strictly to COVID-19 protocols set by the health authorities, such as staying at home, regular washing of hands and wearing of face masks,’’ Ebie said.

He said that to a large extent if the guidelines were diligently complied with, it would help contain the spread of the virus.

He commended the corps members for the initiative, saying that the state government would continue to support them in whatever way it could to make their service in the state more impactful. (NAN)
