Couple sell baby for N50000, land in police net

A couple, in Ogun State, Onyebuchi and Oluchi Eze, have confessed to selling their month-old baby for N50,000.

The couple, who reside Ilara Remo in Remo North Local Government of the state, is now in the net of the Ogun State Police Command.

They confessed to selling their baby to an unidentified woman, who promised better care for the child.

A statement by Ogun State police spokesman, Abimbola Oyeyemi said, “The woman then gave them the sum of fifty thousand naira and they handed over the baby to her despite not knowing her from Adam.”

The buyer is now on the run while the couple had been arrested.

Oyeyemi added, “The suspects, Eze Onyebuchi and his wife Oluchi Eze were arrested on the 16 of December 2021, following an information received by policemen at Ode Remo divisional headquarters.”

According to the suspects, one Ruth Obajimi, introduced them to the buyer, saying she would help provide better care for the child.

The police spokesman further said Obajimi had claimed she came from the Human rights office and promised she would help the couple to take better care of their child.

The state’s Commissioner of Police, Lanre Bankole, has ordered that the suspects be transferred to the anti-human trafficking and Child Labour Unit of the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department, SCID, for further investigation.

Bankole also ordered that the fleeing buyer must be hunted down and arrested.
