British High Commission replaces Ms Catriona Laing with Richard Montgomery

Richard Montgomery has been appointed as the new British High Commissioner to Nigeria by the United Kingdom Government.

On Tuesday, the UK Government announced his appointment in a statement.

Montgomery takes over for Catriona Laing, the UK’s representative in Nigeria since November 2018.

Ms Laing will be assigned to another diplomatic service position, according to the statement.

The High Commissioner represents the UK Government in a Commonwealth country.

They are in charge of the Consulate’s overall direction and operations, which include political relations, trade and investment, press and cultural relations, and visa and consular services.

Montgomery previously worked as a Counsellor (development) and Head of Office at the Department for International Development (DFID), in Abuja, from 2009 to 2013.

He has also worked in Zambia, Bangladesh, India, and Pakistan in Executive Development roles.

His most recent position was as the World Bank Group’s UK Executive Director in Washington.

He holds a Ph.D. in Social Anthropology from Cambridge University, as well as research credentials from GKW Consult Mannheim and Manchester University.

Montgomery is set to start in his new position in April 2023.
