BREAKING: FG commences payment of New National Minimum Wage to civil servants

 

The Federal Government on Thursday, September 26, 2024, began paying civil servants under its payroll.

Bawa Mokwa, the spokesperson of the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation, who made this known assured that workers will begin to get alert of their new minimum wage salary without stating if the minimum wage would be paid alongside its arrears.

According to him: “The Federal Government civil servants will start getting the new minimum wage from today(Thursday) this September 2024. What I can tell you is that the minimum wage salary payment is today I am not sure of the arrears.”

Recall that Ekpo Nta, the Chairman of the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission, had on Tuesday confirmed the government’s approval of the upward review of consolidated public service salary structure, CONPSS in line with the minimum wage(Amendment) Act, 2024.

The Organised labour led by the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, and the Trade Union Congress, TUC, had engaged in a protracted negotiation over an acceptable national minimum wage after a to force the government to agree with its N250000 demand.
They eventually agreed on N70000 as the new National Minimum Wage, following which the National Assembly passed a bill to legalise the agreement.
The bill became law after President Bola Tinubu assented to the amended Minimum Wage Act, 2019.
