Bloody protest: FUOYE VC tasks BEDC on adequate power supply

Priscilla Ofunre, Ado-Ekiti

Vice Chancellor of the Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE), Prof. Kayode Shoremekun, wants Management of Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) to urgently address issue of power outage and epileptic power supply in Oye-Ekiti and Ikole-Ekiti.

Prof. Shoremekun who stated this in Oye-Ekiti, expressed worry on the poor attitude of the management of BEDC to stable electricity supply in Ekiti State.

Prof. Shoremekun lamented that power outage, poor power supply and exorbitant billings often experienced by students living outside the school hostels led to the violent protest which resulted in the attacks on the Convoy of Wife of Ekiti State governor and sudden death of two students recorded by the institution.

While not condoning the violence protest, Prof. Shoremekun pointed out that issue of power was leased to the private sector by the Federal government to ensure efficient service delivery with a view to creating enabling environment for the people.

Prof. Shoremekun expressed worry on factors preventing BEDC from stepping up its game on power supply having signed agreement to meet the yearnings of the people and government on supply.

Prof. Shoremekun also explained that measures had been put in place to prevent protest by students and appealed to parents to synergise with management of FUOYE in order to instill moral virtues and academic excellence in products of the institution.
