Deputy Governor of Bayelsa State, Rear Admiral Gboribiogha John Jonah (rtd), has clarified that the publication in a national newspaper with the title ‘Don’t blame army for involvement in elections’ credited to him was incorrect and misleading.

The deputy governor was said to have made the comment during the commissioning of projects at the 16 Brigade Headquarters , Nigerian Army, Yenagoa, last weekend.

However, while briefing the press at the monthly Transparency Briefing, on Tuesday, at the Government House, Yenagoa, he said such statements as credited to him were untrue.

“It is totally incorrect and out of context to say that Rear Admiral Gboribiogha John Jonah (rtd), Deputy Governor of Bayelsa State said that the Army should not be blamed for some of its activities in the recent elections”, he said.

The deputy governor also said he only affirmed the Army’s correct admission that its role during elections is only to support other security agencies.

He said the Army should therefore conduct itself accordingly to be shielded from blames during elections as it has always been a stabilising factor in the polity.

“The position of the deputy governor is that some overzealous officers of the Army over-stepped their bounds while discharging their functions during the elections, contrary to the roles in support of civil authority”, added.
