Ban on motorcycles, tricycles in Lagos: More women embrace transport business

Daniel Anokwuru

Following the announcement of the ban on motorcycles and tricycles from plying some designated routes by the Lagos State Government, it has been observed that more women have taken to transport business.

Checks by our reporter revealed that some women who were formerly using their vehicle for domestic use, have extended it to commercial purposes.

Along Ikeja axis, the reporter noticed that most of the cars carrying passengers were driven by women.

Mrs. Chukwuman Gift told the reporter that the ban has created a job for her. She said she saw other women doing the job and decided to join them.

She said, “I saw other women doing it, when I got home I told my husband about it, he refused.

“When he went out to work, o picked the car and tried my luck. That day, I made N 9000.

“He was happy when I showed him the money. He said it was because of Area boys that he don’t want me to do the job”.

Mrs. Favour Akparaku, a mother of four, from Edo State, said she was only using her car to take her children to school, but when she saw other women doing the job, she thought it wise to join them instead of sitting idle at home.

She said she makes not less than N8,000, working from 9:00am to 3:00pm, when she would be going back to pick her children from school.
