ASUU: University lecturers yet to call off strike, to decide Thursday

Anthony Iwuoma

Contrary to news flying around, the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) is yet to end its eight-month-old strike.

It was rumoured that the union had directed its members to resume work on Monday, October 17.

However, ASUU is still officially on strike and although it is expected to end soon, that decision shall be taken by the National Executive Council of the university lecturers body on Thursday in an emergency meeting to consider recommendations of its affiliate branches.

This is sequel to the intervention of the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, who had engaged ASUU and the Federal Government in series of meetings.

ASUU had imposed the protracted industrial action on Monday, February 14, 2022, over government failure to address its demands and honour earlier agreements with the lecturers.

Following “failed negotiations”, the Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, had dragged ASUU before the National Industrial Court, which  on September 21, ordered the union to call off the strike.

Dissatisfied with the decision, the Union headed to the Appeal Court but the court ordered ASUU to end the strike immediately after striking out its application for a stay of execution of the decision of the Industrial Court.

According to the Appellate Court, ASUU ought to obey the court’s ruling first before going on appeal.
