A 75-year old man, Romanus Obidgwe has told Anambra State government how his wife, Esther Obidigwe and her two children, Ozioma Obidigwe, and Obuka Obidigwe allegedly tied him up and beat him with iron rod.

Esther and her two children were arrested by the Anambra State government for allegedly beating her 75-year old husband Romanus.

They were arrested following the intervention of the state’s Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Welfare.

According to the media aide to the Women Affairs Commissioner, Chidinma Ikeanyionwu, in a statement on Wednesday, the woman and her children were arrested after her husband and father of the children reported to the ministry.

Romanus, who is a retired senior civil servant, told the commissioner that his wife and children had been in the habit of beating him for a long time.

Narrating the genesis of the latest incident, he said that his daughter, Ozioma sold his firewood without his consent and when he asked her why she did so, she, her brother and his wife tied him up and used a rod to inflict injuries on him.

He further said her family members stopped feeding him and were in the habit of stealing from him. He said his son, Obuka had at one time allegedly gone to the local government where he retired from to claim his benefits.

Romanus added that since 2000 till date, his wife has stopped having sexual intimacy with him, which he accepted in good faith.

He also noted that it took the intervention of a neighbour before they allegedly stopped beating him after which they locked him out of his compound.

Asked if the allegations were true, Romanus’ wife, Esther admitted to beating her husband. However his son, Obuka, denied being present when the incident happened while his daughter, Ozioma said she turned against her father because of what he allegedly wanted to do to him.

The State’s Commissioner for Women Affairs, Ify Obinabo, promised to make sure Romanus got justice.

The trio has been handed over to the police where they will be interrogated and charged to court.
