A former Nigeria’s military Head of State, Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar (rtd.), Ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, and retired Catholic Archbishop of Abuja, John Onaiyekan are among the dignitaries that converged at Abuja to commence a national dialogue on state policing.

The event which is taking place in Abuja, Nigeria’s Capital is sequel to repeated calls by many Nigerians for state police to help curb the rising menace of insecurity in various parts of the country.

The dialogue convened by the Office of the Speaker of the House of Representatives marks the beginning of discussions on the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (alteration) bill 2023 (Establishment of State Police).

Initiated by Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu and 13 other legislators, the bill seeks to address public safety concerns and bolster law enforcement across Nigeria by advocating for police decentralization.

The proposed legislation seeks to introduce state police alongside the federal police by presenting a constitutional framework for states interested in establishing and managing their own law enforcement agencies.

This initiative portrays a significant step towards enhancing security measures and ensuring effective law enforcement nationwide.
