Ex-military president finally admits SDP candidate’s presidential election victory 32 years after

Thirty-two years after he annulled the June 12 presidential election, former military president, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida, has admitted that the late Chief Moshood Abiola won the election under the Social Democratic Party (SDP).

Babangida annulled the June 12 1993 presidential election before the winner was announced. He later handed over the government to an interim government headed by Ernest Shonekan.
Since then, IBB has refused to publicly admit Abiola won the election.

However, at the presentation of his autobiography ‘A Journey in Service”, which was launched in Abuja on Thursday, the former Head of State finally admitted the late Abiola was the winner.

IBB’s admission was revealed by the book reviewer and former Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo while reviewing the book in the presence of dignitaries including President Bola Tinubu who attended the event.

Osinbajo said Babangida admitted in the book that the late Abiola scored the highest votes in the election across the geographical spread of the country.

“There was no doubt in my mind; MKO Abiola won the election. He satisfied all the requirements,” IBB was quoted to have said in the book

Osinbajo also quoted IBB to have commended former President Muhammadu Buhari for acknowledging and honouring Abiola with the national presidential title of Grand Commander of the Federal Republic, GCFR.
