3 drown in Jigawa deep open well

The Jigawa State Police Command has confirmed the death of three friends who drowned in an old well in Basirka town at Gwaram Local Government Area of the state.

The command’s Public Relation officer, SP Abdu Jinjiri, confirmed the incident to reporters, in Dutse, that the said well belonged to state’s House of Assembly member representing Fagam constituency Hon Shu’aibu Inuwa.

He explained that at about 5.30p.m, on Friday, one Jibrin Babangida  of Kofar Fada Basirka town in Gwaram Local Government Area was said to have reported to the police in the area, that  at about 4.30p.m, his son  Ibrahim Jibrin,  aged 27, fell into a well while trying to fetch water.

Jinjiri said on receiving the information, police in the area swung into action in a desperate effort to rescue the victim only to meet his dead body and two there that attempted to rescue him.

He, however, stated that two other persons,  Danliti Mohammed, 35,  and Idi Mohammedd, 35, also drowned into the same well while trying to rescue the first victim before the police arrived at scene.

Jinjiri said all the three persons  were later removed and rushed to Basirka Primary Health Care for medical attention and  were certified dead by the Medical Doctor.

“All the three persons were removed from the well unconscious and were conveyed to Basirka Primary Health Care and where they were all confirmed dead,” he noted.

He said their corpses were later released to their families for necessary burial rites and investigation is still ongoing.

An eyewitness, Malam Isma’il said the incident happened while attempting to evacuate the dirt in the old well, where a water pump machine was lowered into it to absorb water inside.

He explained that the death might be as a result of generator exhaust inside the well that resulted in the subsequent death of the three victims.
