2023: Osinbajo’s camp woos Kwankwaso

Supporters of the 2023 presidential aspiration of Vice President Yemi Osinbajo have reached out to a former Governor of Kano State, who is also leader of the Kwankwasiyya Movement, Sen. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, towards building a formidable political force to fight the election.

The discussion with the Osinbajo camp is one of three options being mulled by Kwankwaso who is presently a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The discussion with the Osinbajo camp would entail Kwankwaso defecting to the All Progressives Congress (APC), a party he left just before the 2019 general election.

The other options being mulled by Kwankwaso to sustain his political relevance according to a Daily Trust investigation, include the formation of a Third Force with other political gladiators in the country and fighting it out within the PDP.

The discussions between the Osinbajo and Kwankwaso camps could further complicate the political permutations in the APC given past insinuations that the Osinbajo camp was in contact with the camp of Abubakar Malami.

With his chances of picking the PDP presidential ticket greatly diminished, Kwankwaso according to Daily Trust is being wooed by the Osinbajo camp with the prospect of the two running on the same ticket.

Osinbajo’s political adviser, Sen. Babafemi Ojodu had been quoted in the media recently as having welcomed Kwankwaso back to the party, a slip that apparently underlined suggestions of an alliance being worked out at that time.

A source said Kwankwaso has been contacted by Osinbajo’s camp as well as the chairman of the national caretaker committee of the APC, Mai Mala Buni, to return to the APC.

“Serious talks are ongoing between oga and them. They want him to return to APC but the option is being weighed. It has not been sealed,” the source said.

Asked if his boss would accept to pair with Osinbajo as running mate in 2023, he said Kwankwaso was open to all options, adding that “No decision has been taken. What I can tell you is that discussions are ongoing.”
