2023 elections: Media should set agenda for enduring democracy, says Emir of Kano

The Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado Bayero, on Wednesday, said the media has the responsibility to set an agenda for a sustainable and enduring democracy ahead of the 2023 general elections.

The monarch spoke while giving remarks at the Nigerian Guild of Editors town hall meeting and capacity building workshop for senior editors held in Kano.

He added that the theme of the workshop “Agenda setting for Sustainable Democratic Culture” came at the right time especially as the nation is preparing to go into general elections.

“The theme is very apt especially at a time like this when another cycle of election is approaching. The media is involved with the high and mighty and the low as well as the powerless, it is, therefore, better placed to set an agenda for enduring democracy and culture,” he said.

To achieve this goal, the emir further said that, ” the media must be free and be responsible in its conduct.”

“A partisan media beholden to certain interests may not be able to discharge this task. We  are optimistic, however, that regular town hall gatherings like this will help in equipping media practitioners with the skills to achieve the goals.”

He urged the leadership of the Editors Guild to fish out bad eggs among them as ”these bad eggs give a bad name to journalism,” he concluded.
