Professor Humphrey Nwosu, the former chairman of the then National Electoral Commission, NEC, who supervised the acclaimed 1993 elections is dead. He was aged 83 years.
Nwosu headed the electoral body now known as the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC,
from 1989 to 1993.
Former head of state, General Ibrahim Babangida, appointed Nwosu to head NEC and he did exceptionally well, having organised the June 12, 1993 election, which is reputed to be the freest and fairest election ever in Nigeria.
Nwosu introduced the Option A4 voting system and the Open Ballot system, contributed to the transparency of the electoral exercise.
The late Chief MKO Abiola of the defunct Social Democratic Party, SDP, trounced Bashir Tofa of the defunct National Republican Convention, NRC, but the election was later annulled by the military junta.
Nwosu was born on October 2, 1941, but died in Virginia, USA.
